Miu Miu has successfully ensnared me in their playfully aspirational rebel prep aesthetic – and I’m not the only one! Sales of the brand were up a whopping 93% year over year, in a time when many other luxury brands are struggling. While I love the Miu Miu aesthetic, my bank account does not love the Miu Miu price tag – for example, their famous top handle Beau bag starts at a whopping $3,400.
In looking for alternatives, Coach was a strong contender – see exhibit one, two, three. They are another brand that has seen strong year-over-year sales, and it’s no surprise given their current line up!
The Brand
However, I also stumbled upon Margesherwood, a Korean brand sold on international retail sites like SSENSE and W Concept. They have a wide variety of styles and colors that match the Miu Miu aesthetic. Leather-wise, some styles come in a nubuck which has a nice effortless slouch.
Pricing
Their price point is competitive with Coach, with most bags ranging from $200s to $500s, with most bags around the ~$300 range. The Soft Boston Bag most closely matches the medium Miu Miu Beau, and retails for $412. I already have a bag of this size and color, so decided to try:
- The Soft Baguette in a vegetable-tanned leather, and
- The Soft Mini Tote in a suede-like nubuck leather
Leather Quality
I just noticed that all of these styles have “Soft” in their name – I’m not entirely sure why, as certain leathers are definitely softer than others!
However, both the vegetable-tanned leather and nubuck leather are very lightweight, which I appreciate in a day-to-day bag. The tanned leather did feel a little dry, but is supposed to develop a patina over time. The nubuck leather is very soft and squishy, as you can tell in the photo below. I really liked this leather, though I’m not sure how difficult care will be over time!
Overall, I’d say the leather quality is OK for the price – again, I do like the fact that it is lightweight. But the trade-off is that they do not feel as luxurious as (old) Polene bags at a similar price point.
Style & Fit
The Baguette was smaller than expected – it still fits all the essentials thanks to its length, but will not fit a Kindle, for example. The shoulder straps are roomy enough to wear comfortably on a shoulder, even with a medium weight coat.
The Mini Soft Tote fit more than I expected to, thanks to its height and depth. It’s still a mini bag for sure, but can fit a phone, full sized wallet, several keys, hand sanitizer and sunglasses.
Verdict
While I think these bags are a little on the pricey end for the leather quantity and quality, they overall are well made and very on-trend silhouettes for a fraction of their luxury counterpart cost. I decided to keep the mini tote, since it comes with a crossbody strap that makes it more practical for me on a day to day basis.
And though I stuck with very safe shades of brown, I really like that they have bright color options as well. The red really drew me in (but I already have two red bags!) and this chartreuse is perfect for spring and summer.
