Polene’s popularity has been increasing steadily over the past few years, but especially more recently with its fame on TikTok. However, with that popularity, comes the unfortunate dance of navigating secondhand marketplaces for a great deal on the brand.
Pre-loved Polene bags often are priced below the threshold for authentication services offered on sites like eBay and Poshmark. I’ve seen many replica bags pop up on all these sites, and hope the following tips can help you avoid heartache as you search for your perfect bag!

Multiple listings by the same seller
Often with the same photos and heavy reliance on stock photos. While there are certainly folks out there with multiple Polene bags *raises hand*, it is unusual to have 2+ of the same style:
Bonus tip: Use Google to reverse image search the photos, to confirm that the seller is using their own photos. I’ve seen people use photos from my blog, which I don’t mind if they reference multiple influencer photos for styling purposes. But definitely not cool when they pretend that those are photos of the item in hand.
Leather quality
Polene’s leather is thick, and they use quite a bit of reinforcement to help the bags keep shape. This deconstruction video by Tanner Leatherstein shows exactly how much goes into the making of a Polene bag. Authentic bags are always shipped in boxes, so a new / nearly new bag should not come with any wrinkles or dents. Those are a clear giveaway, especially when the folded areas of leather look flat and squished, indicating thin leather.
Dustbags
Polene bags come with a rather weighty dustbag that has a felted exterior texture. They don’t wrinkle easily, and the texture can be seen from various angles.
You will see two types of designs on authentic dustbags. Older styles and bags will have the Polene name with the logo design on top. Newer bags (my Dix, Neuf Mini, and Tonca all have these) are more minimalist, and don’t have the designed logo. Both designs of dustbags are made of the same heavyweight material.
August 2023 Update: With the latest Polene rebranding a few months ago, all new styles (ex. Ilo, Nodde) will come with a redesigned dustbag. The exterior now has a more canvas-feel, while the interior has the soft brushed fleece feel. Older style bags purchased summer 2023 or later should also come with these.
Hang tag
For some reason, many fake Polene bags tend to have a “Numero Sept” paper exterior hang tag. If a NWT listing shows the Polene side of the hang tag, ask for a photo of the other side and make sure the style name matches the actual bag.
Original box
Now, I wouldn’t discount a listing simply because it doesn’t come with a box. Keeping boxes can take up a lot of space, an often precious commodity. If a listing does comes with a box, check to make sure it has the following qualities:
- Pearly, iridescent white coloring
- Perfectly sized to fit the bag without squeezing it in
- For the Numero Neuf Mini, the box is vertical and not horizontal
- Bonus points:
- Polene info postcard, which usually has a stylistic photo on it
- Tissue paper with branded monogram, and sticker
- Note: Not all styles come with a box. Given their size, some of the larger totes come only with a dustbag.
2024 Update: Following the 2023 re-brand, Polene has updated boxes for bags purchased around / after Summer 2023. Prior to this, the boxes had foil lettering on the lid including style name and brand (see below).
From Fall 2023 onwards, the new boxes have an invisible emboss of just POLÈNE. See Instagram post below, scroll to the 2nd photo in carousel for a closer look.
Proof of purchase
When in doubt, ask for proof of purchase. And once provided, do reverse Google image search on said proof, to make sure they are not yanking it from another (legitimate) listing. As someone who has rehomed quite a few bags (as mentioned in my review roundup), I take no offense if a prospective buyer asks for proof of purchase!
And last but not least
It’s possible that you can take all of these precautions, and end up with a fake bag. It’s a small chance, but possible nonetheless, if the seller is using legitimate photos from elsewhere. Most platforms, like ebay and Poshmark, are good at refunding buyers if the item is a bait and switch. So submit that ticket for IND or “item not as described”, and get your hard earned money back.
Some styles also tend to be faked more than others – particularly the Numero Dix, Beri and Neuf. More complicated styles like the Numero Huit, older/discontinued styles like Numero Deux, and smaller accessories don’t tend to be repped. Of course, still proceed with some care – but it’s less likely you’ll encounter fakes in these styles.

I was digging around, and it seems like last fall/winter Polene started updating their boxes with the new branding. They no longer have the gold embossing, but an “invisible” one with the POLENE logo in all caps. Hi GMJ, it’s possible – unfortunately, I don’t have two of the same bags so I can’t say for certain.
However, I looked at my Tonca (est. 2021) and Ilo (summer 2023) for comparison, and there are differences in the “Made in Spain” font. Specifically, the Tonca font is a mix of lower & uppercase “Made in Spain” with gold embossing while the Ilo one is “MADE IN SPAIN” in all caps, invisible embossing. I hope that helps!

Hmm I’ve looked around, and I’m not sure if it has changed. This bag was released after the big rebranding of the logo, so it seems to have always had the same font. But, I could be wrong – let me know if you find out otherwise!

Hi J – this was a tough one, as I'm less familiar with the Cyme bag than others. And it's really close… I fear the replicas are getting better :(
Like you mentioned, there are minor details that seem to be off (ex. the magnetic button size). However, the biggest flag for me is the direction of the leather grain. Cyme is similar to Dix, in that the textured grain runs up-down & sideways at a perfect 90 degree. On the Depop bag, it seems to run diagonally instead. Hi Maggie – my Beri / Onze was an older version, so some of the details have changed since the rebranding. However, I checked my newer bags (Neiti and Ilo), and the “Made in Spain” is in all caps in a thin font. For the Beri, I’d say if the leather feels sturdy without being overly shiny, then there is a good chance it is authentic. Hope that helps!
Thanks so much for your reply. It feels very substantial, not like the dupes which tend to be floppy, and has that leather smell. And funny you mention about the shine; it is not shiny at all, which I was worried about, but I guess that's a good thing? My only concern was the Made in Spain, which looks like is fine that it is all caps, and the missing white tag inside; but my Numero Sept purchased around 2021 directly from Polene doesn't have a white tag and I looked at a ton of online reviews and looks like some of the Beri bags don't have a tag inside and some do. So if that's the only thing, looks like it's real? Also the interior is that burgundy twill lining very similar to my other Polene bags and I feel that is not replicated in the fakes. The box is the more recent Polene box with that faded Polene branding and has a little sticker on the side that says Beri, the tag is the more recent tags Polene is using, tissue paper is similar to what I'm seeing in unboxing videos and the dust bag is exactly that exterior canvas-like feel and softer material on the inside just like the one for my Neuf mini. So I think I scored a real one??
Hi Rin! I am not aware of Polene using serial codes or numbers on their bags – especially on any bags made in 2024 or earlier.
You should be good then, enjoy your bag! The Beri still remains one of my favorite Polene styles.
The “Made in Spain” in all caps happened around the time of their rebranding starting mid-2023. I just saw that the same seller who sold me the Polene Beri bag in lilac just listed the same exact bag with same description and same photos of the listing of the one I purchased! I'm so concerned now that mine is a fake, I would otherwise say this is absolutely a fake, but wow it looks so perfect. Even smells like real leather. So confused..

Hi Marketa! If you mean an additional piece of plain leather attached to the bag with a removable metal loop, yes, that is typically a sign of a fake bag.

Hi Kristy, I recently purchased a preloved polene numero dix, can I send you a photo to verify if its authentic ? I would really appreciate your help.
I notice many cyme bags with plastic foam covering on the straps. These are listed as new with tags. I ordered one cyme from polene and it did NOT have covering on the straps. Some on resale site do have covering but are in boxes with tags etc…. My gut says fake. What are your thoughts?
