Best Diaper Bags That Don’t Look Like Diaper Bags

No hate to traditional diaper bags! I tried several myself, but ultimately found them bulky and cumbersome in tight spaces. (Flashbacks to high school me accidentally whacking people in the hallway with an overstuffed backpack full of textbooks.) They’re certainly functional with all the pockets and organization, and if they work for you, that’s great! This guide is more for the parents, grandparents, and caregivers looking for something a little different.

For the past year, our go-to has been the Everlane Transit 3-Way Tote. I’m bummed it’s no longer sold, because it worked well as an all-around diaper bag during the early months – especially when you need to carry everything “just in case.” It continues to also be great as baby’s carry-on diaper bag for road trips and flights.

More recently, we’ve transitioned to using regular bags or this smaller Calpak messenger bag, depending on the outing. But, aside from these two bags – what are the other options out there?

Features to Look For

• Lightweight and somewhat flexible. Not overly structured, so it can slide easily into a stroller’s underseat basket
• Some organization, ideally at least 2–3 interior pockets and 1–2 exterior pockets
• A top closure. Preferably a zipper, but even a hook or magnetic button helps to prevent things from spilling out
• Additional straps so it can be worn crossbody or backpack-style when needed

In general, I’ve found that while any backpack can work, non-diaper backpacks often become black holes where things pile vertically and disappear. Totes tend to work better for me because everything is laid out horizontally with a wider opening.

A lot of these lean more functional (and slightly sporty/casual) than purely aesthetic, simply because lightweight materials and pockets are priorities for me. If you’re looking for something more fashion-forward, skip to the section below on turning any bag into a diaper bag.

• The Calpak Luka Mini Duffel transitions really well between diaper bag, gym bag, and general everyday duffel
• For something sportier, I like the Cotopaxi Mente 22L Tote and the Topo Designs Mountain Tote.
• Slightly sleeker sporty options include the Lululemon On My Level Tote and Convertible Ruched Shoulder Bag
• For something convertible, the LeSportsac Double Trouble Backpack works well because of its extra-wide top opening. That said, if it’s packed full, you’ll probably need to remove some items to access the pockets. Still, I love the flexibility of switching between tote and backpack mode — plus it comes in some fun prints

How I Turn Any Bag Into a Diaper Bag

This is the system that has worked best for me during the first year, whether I’m using:

• A simple canvas tote,
• The classic L.L.Bean Boat and Tote,
• A packable tote from Longchamp or Topo Designs,
• Or even a regular large handbag like my beloved Celine Seau Sangle.

What You’ll Need

Changing Mat

I like this Ubbi changing mat set. I usually keep the following tucked into the sleeve so it’s ready to grab and go, especially for tighter bathroom spaces (eg. airplanes):

• an extra puppy pee pad,
• two diapers (the second one doubles as a “pillow” 😂)
• a small pack of wipes

In the early months, we used this on top of public changing stations for extra peace of mind. Maybe overkill… but we are first-time parents. Nowadays, we mostly use it for diaper changes outside bathrooms – on a sofa, the ground, the backseat of the car, etc.

Zippered Pouches

I sewed my own, but there are lots of great options out there. I recommend lightweight, flexible pouches that can conform to different bag shapes. Some cute options: Bold & lightweight, quilted & cozy, pretty & floral

I typically carry at least two pouches:

• one for extra diapers (sometimes 5+ if we’ll be out awhile)
• one for clothes, muslins, burp cloths, snacks, bibs, and baby’s silicone straw cup

I personally don’t bother with waterproof pouches. Instead, I keep a handful of Ziploc bags tucked away in case of a 💩💥 emergency situation that needs containment.

Bonus

We love these smaller Nalgenes for carrying water for formula. They’re incredibly light and take up very little space. We usually pre-fill baby bottles with measured formula powder and just add water as needed. Very plain aesthetically… but I fixed that by decorating mine with stickers of baby’s face :)

Ultimately, the “best” diaper bag is just the one that makes your day a little easier, whether that’s a highly designed backpack or a random tote you already own and love!
